Island Institute opens Archipelago in downtown Rockland. This store and gallery in the heart of the “art capital of Maine” provides a venue for island and coastal artists and makers to present and sell their work .
It soon grows into a full-scale business development program complete with mentoring for Mainers in the creative economy and an annual conference. Since 2000, Archipelago has supported Maine artists and makers with $4.5 million in sales income.
