This summer marks the 20th year of Islesford Boatworks, a community-based nonprofit on Little Cranberry Island that teaches traditional wooden boatbuilding to all ages. Throughout the summer, it will be running special programs and events to celebrate this milestone, culminating in its first ever Blue Duck Derby on Aug 1. During this charitable fundraising event, thousands of numbered rubber ducks will be released into the harbor in a race toward a finish line. People can “adopt” or buy tickets for the ducks with prizes awarded to the winner. Proceeds will help Boatworks continue to offer free and reduced programming for local kids, as well as help fund the renovation of its waterfront shop, the historic “Blue Duck” building.

By teaching kids to build traditional wooden boats, Islesford Boatwork accomplishes its mission: Building opportunity, community, and a future for Maine’s working waterfront.
