As a networked organization, the Island Institute is committed to better connecting communities along and beyond the coast of Maine to support local leaders and accelerate the pace of addressing complex problems.

Our network efforts begin with identifying pressing issues locally that could benefit from information, experiences, or partnerships from beyond our coast. Through thoughtful network design and collaboration, we invest in experiences and produce resources that build meaningful relationships with peers and content area experts, document and share locally-relevant resources, support place-based learning exchanges, and engage in shared advocacy that improves the lives of coastal and island residents in Maine.

We currently support a host of network efforts along the coast of Maine, throughout our state, and in similarly situated geographies such as islands in Southern New England, Chesapeake Bay, the Outer Banks, the Great Lakes, Alaska, Hawaii, Scotland, Denmark, and Japan.
