Island Institute's free summer lecture series returns to Rockland
ROCKLAND – For the second year in a row, the Island Institute will be hosting a free six-week summer lecture series that will feature authors, artists, and experts sharing insights into life on the Maine coast, as well as their perspectives, reflections, and insights on everything from art and aquaculture to modern-day challenges and connections. Events will take place in the fourth-floor conference room at the Island Institute, 386 Main Street in Rockland, and are free and open to the public.

Island students receive over $50,000 in Island Institute scholarships
58 island students receive financial awards for post-secondary education; eight high school juniors accepted into mentoring and support program
ROCKLAND, ME – The Island Institute recently awarded scholarships to 58 island students pursuing post-secondary education at colleges, universities, and technical schools across the United States and Canada. The scholarships, made possible by the Island Education Fund, totaled $50,900. Students from 10 of the 15 year-round, unbridged islands received awards, which are renewable for up to four years of post-secondary education.

WATERVILLE – On May 31, 2018, the Maine Broadband Coalition will host the 2018 Maine Broadband Coalition Conference where Maine communities and national experts will share lessons learned to date, look at new ways for solving shared challenges, and identify what’s next for broadband funding and policy in Maine.

Archipelago hosts two receptions for summer gallery show during First Friday Art Walk June 1 and July 6 in Rockland

ROCKLAND – Join Archipelago to celebrate the opening of its new gallery show, “Turning Towards the Sun,” and the start of the summer during Rockland’s next Art Walk. The Island Institute’s store and gallery will host two artist receptions for this show with another scheduled for the July 6th Art Walk.

Island Institute connects global energy leaders, recognizes Islesboro as island innovator at 8th annual Island Energy Conference
In the wake of recent natural disasters, Maine islands and other coastal communities share innovative energy projects and help lead the way for building community resiliency around the world.
SOUTH PORTLAND – The Island Institute held its eighth annual Island Energy Conference in South Portland on May 4th, bringing together energy experts and island leaders from Maine, New England, and around the world to discuss common energy challenges and share solutions. This year’s theme, “Resilient Together,” highlighted what islanders are doing to increase the resilience of their energy systems and communities in the face of an increasingly unpredictable world.
