Close to 200 people attended the Artists and Makers Conference, Friday, April 6, at Point Lookout in Northport. For artists and crafters in the creative economy, the Archipelago/Island Institute-sponsored event offered a full day of sessions.
Workshops focused on three different tracts of sessions: Foundational, for those just starting a business; Transformational, for those in the process of growing their business; and Inspirational, those who are established but looking for inspiration.

The fifth annual Artists & Makers Conference, offering tips and strategies to help start and grow arts-related businesses in Maine, will take place Friday, April 6, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Point Lookout in Northport. Hosted by Archipelago and the Island Institute, the conference is open to all artists and makers who live and produce work in Maine. 

Early bird registration runs to Saturday, March 17, for the 5th annual Artists & Makers Conference, produced by the Island Institute’s Archipelago gallery/store. The conference is set for Friday, April 6, at a new location, Point Lookout. Artists and makers who live and produce work in Maine are invited to gather for a full day of information, networking and presentations on a variety of topics from professionals and peers. The Artists & Makers Conference offers three themed tracks — Foundational, Transformational and Inspirational — that highlight information for those just starting a business; those looking to take their business to the next level; and those interested in tips for maintaining fulfillment, passion and inspiration in their businesses.

One of the biggest challenges for contemporary artists, craftspeople, and makers living in Maine is finding the right brick and mortar store to carry their original artwork and products. One solution to getting more exposure and sales is to sell the work on consignment with shops and galleries. Consignment is an agreement between the artist and the shop to sell the artist’s work for a percentage of the commission. Archipelago, both a gallery and the retail side of the Island Institute in Rockland, represents nearly 250 artists from 20 different islands and the coast of Maine. For the last two years, Archipelago has hosted an Artists and Makers Conference that touched on the topic of consignment as a viable option.

The Island Institute will host a special evening conversation on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 5:30-7 p.m., with chef and author Barton Seaver, and Rob Snyder, Ph.D, president of the Island Institute, discussing Barton’s new book, American Seafood.
The event will take place at the Island Institute, 386 Main Street in Rockland, with a cocktail reception and book signing to follow in Archipelago, the Island Institute’s store.

The changing seasons bring new artists and a new selection of paintings and local works of art to Archipelago. The Island Institute’s store and gallery will host an opening reception for its fall gallery show Friday, Nov. 3, from 5-8 p.m. The public is invited to stop into the gallery’s 386 Main St. location during Rockland’s First Friday Art Walk to enjoy light refreshments, see the new pieces and meet some of the artists. The show, which highlights the work of printmaker Kathleen Buchanan; painters Claudia Diller and Hélène Farrar; and fiber artist Anne Walker, will be on display through the winter.

On Friday, September 1st, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Bill Laurita, president of Swans Island Company, will join Archipelago and some of the gallery’s featured artists for a special reception during Rockland’s First Friday Art Walk.The public is invited to stop into the gallery’s 386 Main Street location to hear about the history of Swans Island Company on the Maine coast over the past 25 years as well as the story behind many of its handcrafted textiles.

Archipelago, the Island Institute’s store and gallery will host an opening reception for its summer gallery show from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at 386 Main St. during Rockland’s First Friday Art Walk.
Attendees can see new pieces and meet some of the artists. The show, which will highlight the work of painters Wendy Newcomb and Gary Hoyle, as well as Appleton wood turner Richard Dunham, will run Aug. 4 through Oct. 29.
Newcomb is a representational painter whose primary mediums include oil, gouache and acrylic.
