Doug Schlemmer is the Chief Operating Officer at the Island Institute, where he leads operational strategy and builds the systems, processes, and organizational capabilities that enable the Institute to achieve its mission and long-term strategic goals.  Over the course of a 25-year career, Doug has helped organizations translate ambitious strategies into measurable results through strategic planning, operational excellence, organizational transformation, and performance management. He joined the Island Institute from Unum Group, where he served as Assistant Vice President of Customer Experience Transformation. In that role, he partnered across the enterprise to build the governance, capabilities, and culture, to position Unum as a leader in customer experience.  Earlier in his career, Doug was a management consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton, advising clients on strategy, organizational change, governance, and operational effectiveness.  He also has extensive experience in international development.  He founded the World Assistance for Cambodia’s Rural School Project, serving as its Executive Director, and has advised organizations including the Ford Foundation and Mercy Corps on education, peacebuilding, and community development initiatives.

Doug holds degrees from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.  He lives in Maine with his wife and daughter and enjoys exploring the coast, hiking and camping with his family.
