A room full of boatbuilders, utility managers, aquaculture operators and fishermen recently gathered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to answer one question: What does it actually take to electrify commercial workboats?
The conversation was practical and specific. Which battery chemistry holds up in a salty environment? Who pays for the charging infrastructure at a wharf? Can a 42-foot lobster boat run all day on a single charge? Nobody in the room was debating whether to make the transition. They were focused on how to get there.
In Maine, Island Institute has worked with partners to electrify 22 commercial boats across aquaculture, fishing and other working waterfront applications. Heron, a 28-foot oyster workboat — the first fully electric aquaculture boat of its size in the state — is successfully operating at Maine Ocean Farms. Across the Gulf, Oceans North, in partnership with the Membertou First Nation and Allswater Naval Architects, is launching Canada’s first all-electric commercial lobster boat, a 43-foot vessel designed for the real work of setting and hauling traps.
These aren’t isolated experiments; they are evidence of regional momentum. The marine industry is taking notice. For commercial fishermen and aquaculture operators, electric propulsion can reduce fuel and maintenance costs while creating quieter, healthier working environments for crews. For boatbuilders and marine businesses, electric propulsion is an opportunity to compete in a rapidly growing global market.
Electric boats are projected to become a $20 billion industry in the next five years, growing about 13% annually. Europe currently holds more than 40% of the global market, but North America has the greatest potential for growth. New England and Atlantic Canada are uniquely positioned to seize this opportunity and lead the transition.
On both sides of the border, we have world-class boatbuilders, innovative marine businesses, commercial fisheries, aquaculture operations, research institutions and working waterfronts where innovative ideas can be tested under real operating conditions.
The technology, however, is advancing faster than the systems needed to support it. Electric boats are often purchased one at a time by individual harvesters, who lack access to financing options designed for large commercial fleets. Charging infrastructure remains inconsistent, and questions about ownership, investment and maintenance are largely unresolved. As adoption grows, the industry will need more marine electricians and technicians, but workforce training has not yet caught up.
Addressing these challenges will require coordinated investment in charging infrastructure, financing, workforce development and demonstration projects — along with collaboration among manufacturers, policymakers, lenders, utilities and the people who rely on these boats every day.
