The Island Institute will hold its annual energy conference at Congregation Bet Ha’am, 81 Westbrook St., South Portland April 27 and 28.

The event will bring together 150 island leaders and energy experts from three countries – the United States, Japan and Denmark – and six states – Maine, Alaska, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island – to discuss common energy challenges and the resources available to address them.

This year’s event, “Charting Transitions,” will include welcoming remarks from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and a keynote address from Tetsunari Iida, executive director of the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies, and will highlight how New England’s islands are charting the course toward a sustainable energy future, mapping out their transitions to clean energy systems that strengthen local communities and economies.

Two awards will be presented at this year’s conference Friday morning. The Island Energy Innovation Award will be presented to Marian Chioffi on behalf of Monhegan Plantation Power District, and the Island Institute Community Champion Award will be presented to Ed Schwabe on behalf of the board and staff of the Swan’s Island Electric Cooperative.
