Julia Maher
Director of Foundation and Government Support

Julia is responsible for expanding grant and government funding for all our programming areas. She joined the Island Institute in 2014 as the Island Scholars Network and Internship program coordinator within the Community Development team. After helping to grow both these program areas, Julia transitioned into her new role as the Director of Foundation and Government support in 2015. Julia works closely with the directors of each of our programming areas to ensure that the Island Institute continues to grow funding in ways that directly respond to our communities’ needs.

Julia grew up in Owls Head and is thrilled to be back living and working in her hometown in coastal Maine. Before coming to the Island Institute, Julia spent a number of years living and working in China, where she co-founded her own English language learning school. She holds a MA in Humanities and Social Thought from New York University, and a PhD in English and Poetry from the University of Georgia.
