Shey Conover began working with the Island Institute in November 2002, as a GIS fellow on Islesboro. During her fellowship, Shey worked with town organizations, community members and school teachers on various local GIS projects. Shey also provided GIS training to community members.

In July 2004, Shey was hired as the GIS Specialist at the Institute to continue to support island and remote coastal communities in local planning, education, and conservation efforts through the use of GIS. Shey's work has also included studying in underserved regions of Guatemala where she worked with local organizations develop database management and web design skills.
