Offshore Wind Project

Maine’s Governor has recently appointed an Ocean Energy Task Force charged with bringing recommendations to the Maine legislature on policies for encouraging the development of offshore wind, among other sources of alternative energy.  Dr. George Baker has been appointed to that Task Force.

Baker and the Institute have provided the task force with a Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis demonstrating the close proximity of Maine’s island communities to offshore wind zones that are also in shallow enough water to support turbines on towers fixed to the bottom.

We believe that Maine-island and coastal-community wind projects will help inform the public as to the costs and benefits of utilizing Maine’s coastal wind resources for local and state benefit.
