Reflecting a Valued Way of Life
Social capital is often defined as the levels of reciprocity and trust found within a community, and the important roles they play relative to its success. Maine’s island and working-waterfront communities enjoy a high level of social capital, evidenced by a wealth of nonprofit organizations – libraries, historical societies, affordable-housing groups, and many others – that engage an exceptionally high number of hard-working volunteers.
As part of our mission to build community support, the Island Institute assists with the coordination of nonprofit interests to best serve communities and residents. Providing financial, professional and material support through a wide range of programs and initiatives, we partner with community nonprofits to help them meet local needs and achieve important goals.
