Island Governance
The Island Institute began as a way to help deepen public understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by Maine's remaining 15 year-round island communities. Self-governance is extremely important to most island communities because it ensures that the people who best understand these unique challenges and needs – islanders – make the decisions that most affect their lives.

Tremendous Dedication
Despite their comparatively small populations and size, island municipalities have all the responsibilities of much larger communities. Primarily dependent on volunteers to serve as selectmen, members of the planning board, and in many other roles, island governance demands tremendous dedication and a lot of time from local residents. As state-mandated regulations increase, island governments need support to handle the paperwork, and implement and enforce requirements, The Island Institute is committed to providing this assistance; helping ensure that islands retain local control over their schools and public services, and providing information to help islanders make informed decisions for the good of their communities. One of the ways we offer this support is through the Maine Islands Coalition.
