Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance Kicks Off with Free Film Event The Fish Belong to the People
Monday November 30th, 2009
The Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance (MMFHA) is pleased to announce its official kick-off event: a free showing of The Fish Belong to the People, a new documentary film about the Port Clyde groundfish fishermen, on Saturday, December 5th at 6:30 p.m. at the Tenants Harbor town office on Route 131. This event, hosted by the Tenants Harbor Conservation Commission and Friends of St. George, will also feature an exhibit of photographs by Antonia Small, and a panel discussion by Port Clyde fishermen following the film. Donations to the MMFHA, a nonprofit organization, are welcome, as are new MMFHA members.
The Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance was established in 2009 to help preserve the fishing way of life in Midcoast Maine. Based in Port Clyde, the MMFHA was founded by a group of concerned community members and fishermen as a nonprofit entity that could help in the fight to preserve what has been a way of life in the Midcoast region for centuries. "We are working to coordinate the community's effort to create infrastructure that will assist fishermen in keeping the fleet in a safe and reliable condition," says Sherm Hoyt, a member of the MMFHA's advisory board.
The Midcoast Maine Fishing Heritage Alliance is dedicated to actively working to sustain the local fishery - the central aspect of the community's cultural heritage - through funding, research and education. "It may take a community to save a fishery and we are grateful for the support," says Glen Libby, a Port Clyde fisherman and another member of the MMFHA's advisory board.
