Kate Power has spent the last few months working with the Long Island Community Center Comprehensive Planning Committee on rehabilitation projects to update the building and make it more energy-efficient. She has also written grant proposals, explored other grant opportunities,
completed research on program efficiency, helped with promotional efforts to increase use of the community center and is involved in affordable-housing efforts.
In other news, Kate has been approached by an island resident to assist with launching a summer farmers' market on the island. She has contacted a member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Marketing Service, in regards to a grant through the Farmer's Market Promotion Program and is very excited about this project and its prospects for the town of Long Island.
So far, Kate has enjoyed being a part of making life better for island residents, saying, "While the progress with the Community Center is slow, it's recognizable development and I like being a part of it. My advisor is understanding and accessible, and is motivated to get this building re-built. The Historical Society group is a dedicated bunch of people (to say the least), and that project's coolness factor is 10 (I'm digitizing old film and cutting
it with interviews for next summer's exhibit.)"
