Island Fellow Fills Town's Mapping Needs

Chebeague Island Highlights

Monday April 6th, 2009
Thea Youngs

Thea Youngs continues as the town's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Fellow, providing maps and data such as photography of Hope Island, lot maps, and maps of mooring locations provided by the harbormaster. She has also created a large number of maps for the natural-resource inventory, and is participating in discussions on how best to deal with the town's long-term GIS needs.

Recently, Thea traveled with the harbormaster on a Coast Guard icebreaker to discuss the channel path needed by the ferry in the case of icing over, and the locations of moorings in relation to the channel.

Chebeague resident Beth Howe, who serves as Thea's Island Fellow Advisor, aptly expresses the benefit of Thea's fellowship to the Chebeague community: "Thea is in her second year as the GIS fellow for the Town of Chebeague Island. She has become an essential part of the Town's comprehensive planning effort. The information that she can provide in mapped form is some of the best and most powerful data that we have. She is about to begin the training as an island EMT. In short, she has become an active and popular member of our community."
