POPULAR BENEFIT DINNER WILL HELP LOCAL FISHERMEN’S GROUP
The third annual Midcoast Fishermen’s Association (MFA) Fundraising Dinner will be held on Saturday, August 9th beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Martinsville Grange, Route 131 between Tenants Harbor and Port Clyde. Doug Anderson will be the chef again this year, and everyone is welcome to enjoy a delicious haddock dinner that includes a baked, stuffed filet drizzled with Newburg sauce, salad, homemade biscuits, dessert and a beverage. There is no suggested donation, but all proceeds will help the MFA continue its work to restore groundfish populations and sustain fishing communities along the coast of Maine. As always, the fresh seafood is donated by local fishermen and the desserts are contributed by some of the community’s best bakers. Due to the increasing popularity of this event, there will be extra seating provided under a tent on the grounds. “We’ve really been pleased with the turnout since we held the first dinner in 2006,” said Glen Libby, the MFA’s president. “People seem to understand how important it is to keep our fishing traditions alive – they’re an important part of our state’s heritage and and its economy.” Rob Snyder, Vice-President of the Island Institute, which has provided resources and staff to help the MFA launch Maine’s first Community Supported Fishery (CSF) project, agrees. “Many community fishing fleets have disappeared due to diminishing groundfish stocks. The Port Clyde fleet remains active, but we need to do whatever we can to prevent it from going the way of those that once comprised a thriving industry along the Maine coast.” For more information about the Midcoast Fishermen’s Association, please visit its website, www.midcoastfishermen.org.
