Helen served as a Fellow on Chebeague Island from 2001-2002, doing sea sampling with Chebeague fishermen as well as working in the island school and island library. While on Chebeague, Helen:
- Supported science and social studies units on the marine food web and tree identification.
- Helped organize field trips to Quebec City and to a marine-science lab.
- Wrote a successful grant to obtain new computer equipment for the Chebeague Island School.
- Assisted in inventorying the children's book collection at the Chebeague Library
- Ran after-school programs at the Recreation Center including a summer "Lobster Camp."
- Piloted a lobster tagging study with students in collaboration with Bigelow Ocean Laboratory.
After completing her Fellowship, Helen took a position as an environmental educator on the west coast.
