David returns to North Haven Community School this September to further implement place-based learning opportunities into the school’s curriculum. David is particularly excited about continuing to work with 5th and 6th-grade students on a project to create a trail network at Mullins Head and continuing with high-school students on a CREST project examining the history of clamming on North Haven. Finally, David is also looking forward to repeating the success of his pond-hockey clinic and upcoming projects with Waterman’s Community Center.

David Steckler received a Master of Science in Ecological Teaching and Learning from Lesley University. He also holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Economics from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. David has extensive teaching experience, serving as a 9th-grade Biology and Earth Science teacher at the Hillside School in Marlborough, MA, a math and science teacher at the North Country School in Lake Placid, NY and as an assistant instructor with Hurricane Island Outward Bound: Southern Land Programs in FL. David also worked as an Assistant Director at Camp Owatonna for Boys in Harrison, Maine and as an environmental education instructor with the Camp Leelanau Outdoor Center in Michigan.

David is most recently from Marlborough, MA and says: I hope that I am helping to provide examples and the know-how for teachers to engage in outside the textbook, place-based education projects. I hope that I am also leaving behind some sort of legacy in terms of a unique voice and perhaps a different perspective. To some extent I hope that I can, to some degree, hold up a mirror for teachers and help them to see their teaching practices and the teaching norms they have developed over the years so that they can challenge themselves to try different things. On a more holistic or institutional level, I hope that I am helping to improve the education provided by the school, improve teacher-to-teacher interactions, and improve interactions between the school and the community.
