Alden Robinson

Alden Robinson is returning for a second year on Long Island, continuing his work with the town government as it implements the first tax revaluation and continue to update and digitize the municipal records. Alden will also remain involved with the Year-round Housing Committee which, in May 2007, was granted voter approval to establish affordable housing on town-owned land. Finally, Alden will use his technological expertise as he completes GIS projects with forestry and emergency-services crews and continues to build and manage the town's website.

Alden Robinson recently graduated from Williams College with a B.A. in American Studies/Maritime Studies, with coursework in American history, literature and art, geosciences and digital media. He spent a semester at University College Cork, National University of Ireland, learning traditional Irish fiddle and performing with UCC Traditional Ensemble and Ceili Band; an experience greatly appreciated by Long Island music lovers. .

Alden also spent an interdisciplinary semester in maritime studies with the Williams Mystic Program, conducting research in Louisiana, California, and the Gulf of Maine. Alden honed his GIS skills while working as a research assistant for the Williams College Department of Economics, providing GIS assistance for a World Band-sponsored study of urbanization.

Alden is from Bremen, Maine and reflects upon his island experience: "It's a challenging order: moving to a tiny little town where everyone has known everyone else forever and trying to fit into the social fabric of the community. It doesn't seem like it should work, except that somehow, people are friendly and, somehow, we all get along and have fun, even though we're all different and we're all a little weird in our own ways. And after a while it stopped mattering that I hadn't lived here forever, because there's only one store and only one boat back to town, and hanging out with people eventually seemed like the logical thing to do."
