Tremendous Tool
The Island Institute has invested in using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as a tool to help local decision-makers gain access to the high-quality planning information that will enable them to make informed decisions about the future of their communities. Ranging from innovative research projects on a national and international level to community-integrated GIS with Maine middle-school-students, GIS is an important method to help plan for the future.
We are committed to using this tremendous tool to help advocate for the future of the year-round island and working-waterfront communities in the Gulf of Maine by:
- Producing original, important research to highlight issues affecting coastal Maine and to promote informed advocacy options;
- Educating communities and students about how they can use GIS to help with local planning efforts.
