Best Practices in PK-12 Literacy

All teachers are literacy teachers. Based on interest expressed by island and coastal teachers and administrators, we are excited to host this in-depth, three-day literacy institute facilitated by Portland Public Schools literacy coaches Tracy Warren and Elizabeth Spinney. Both facilitators have broad experience in elementary, middle and high school literacy coaching.

The Literacy Institute will focus on best practices in PK-12 literacy and will be tailored to the identified grade levels and needs of participants.

About the Facilitators

Tracy Warren

Tracy is a literacy coach, consultant, and staff developer. She is a UMO and USM graduate with a master’s degree in literacy. She has also attended Columbia University in New York City. Along with providing professional development for schools, Tracy has worked as a literacy coach for the Portland Public Schools since 2002 and an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Southern Maine since 2003. Her main goal working with us is to focus on improving instruction for all students through school site support.

Elizabeth Spinney

Beth is a literacy coach for Portland Public Schools. She is a UMF and USM graduate with a master’s degree in educational leadership. She has been responsible for implementing the reading interventions for identified at-risk students to accelerate their reading achievement, as well as, supporting classroom teachers with administration and analysis of literacy assessments, implementation of the reading and writing curricula using the workshop model, and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a diverse population of learners. For three years, Beth provided ongoing, monthly professional development for the Pre K/K teachers and ed techs, facilitated Pre K leadership team meetings, and acted as the liaison between the public school Pre-K classrooms and the three Pre-K partnership sites.
