Early College Awareness

For students to set higher-education goals, they must have exposure to, and encouragement for, post-secondary learning experiences.  Middle school is an optimal setting for engaging students in college-awareness activities and events, and we have several avenues for them to explore future fields of study.

Early college awareness is also a major component of the Island Institute’s Community for Rural Education, Stewardship and Technology (CREST) program.  This five-year program for middle- and high school students, funded by a $3.8 million National Science Foundation grant, incorporates early college awareness through visits to college campuses and program collaborations with the University of Maine, Machias, College of the Atlantic, and Bowdoin College.
