Down East

Named because ships from southerly ports are propelled by downwind trade winds as they sail to the east, there has always been much debate as to where the Downeast Maine region begins.  The Island Institute identifies Down East as locations east of Penobscot Bay and the Penobscot River.

This region includes Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park, and the coast of Hancock and Washington counties all the way to the Canadian border.
